Why do you think the boys are so reluctant to give Thomas any answers in Chapter 2?
Like whenever Thomas asks a question, the boys are so reluctant to answer any of them.

The boys do not know or trust him. They are suspicious of Thomas' arrival, particularly, Gally, who thinks he has seen Thomas before.
