Metamorphosis: What exactly is the point of Gregor changing into a large bug?

We're never apprised of exactly why Gregor is turned into a bug; it happens in the opening of the story. He never even questions the transformation. Was his former existence bad? We don't really know that either, although I wouldn't love or be happy supporting an entire household of people who have no desire to take responsibility for themselves.
