George Eliot has given a picture of human life in “The Mill on the Floss” . She has delineated some life like characters which enable the readers to know characters which enable the readers to know some hidden mysteries of life .The character of Maggie’s presents the ups n downs of life in such an ideal way as one cannot help being convinced
“we cannot enjoy life until it is tired by sufferings”

Maggie‘s tragic error is that she wants to shower her love & affection very sincerely on her concerned characters and also want to b loved to madness. But throughout her life she cannot preserve the fact that the desire of love is never to b fulfilled in this treacherous world. Maggie’ s loves deformed Philip sympathetically and Stephen Guest passionately but this love leads Maggie ‘s to the valley of sorrows, tears & miseries.
Maggie is hyper sensitive girl. Her life shows that she was never been able to adjust herself in her native atmosphere .She seems to be like a candle constantly being threatened by the stormy gales of circumstances. She is just like a flower that is caught by the cruel clutches of autumn before enjoying its first spring. Her soul always cries for enjoying a few moments of love . But she can not materialize her desire of being loved. Her mother takes her as disobedient , ill mannered and ill behaved girl. Her dearest brother Tom cannot shower his love on her according to her expectations. Same is the situation that she has to face in her youth .She can neither enjoy the love of Philip nor that of Stephen Guest. George Eliot remarks
