Fate, in terms of the story, The Monkey's Paw, is something that we can interfere with. Mr. White believes the paw has the power to grant him three wishes, and even after being warned about the dangers of interfering with fate..... he snatches it from the fire of destruction and makes three wishes anyway. His first wish is for money..... a wish that is seemingly granted through the death of his son. Thus, the Fakir's curse is immediately established as reality, emphasizing the story's main theme, which is that interfering with fate, especially when driven by greed, leads to tragedy.
