How does Mr. White get the monkey's paw?

Mr. White gets the monjey's paw from the Sargeant-Major. Note that although the Sargeant-Major brings the paw into Mr. White's home, he does try to destroy it in the fire. Mr. White, however, snatches it from the flames.
