By the end of the story, the motherly, calm woman we see in the beginning has changed into a distraught, grieving woman who misses his son beyond words and only wants to make things "right" again. She will spend the rest of her life grieving and wishing that they could undo the wishes and would never have heard of the Monkey's Paw.
