The writer builds suspense as the man walks back and forth in front of the White's home. Mrs. White notices the man's dress, thinks about the two-hundred pounds, and notices his hesitation. We almost expect the money, but we do not expect the news about Herbert's death. Two-hundred pounds for the life of their son.
