What could happen to the first owner of the paw to make him wish for death?

The Sargeant-Major doesn't know what happened to the first man's first two wishes. By his desire to die (third wish), we can infer that he paid a great price for the first two...... the loss of family, an accident, deformation..... anything. None-the-less, we know the result was that he wished to die.
