What do you think is the purpose of the "knowing glance" exchanged between mother and son during the initial scene of the story?

Also, what does the messnger mean when he says that Herbert "is not in any pain"? How does the author clarify this meaning in the following paragraphs?

From the glance, and the earlier information we garner about Mr. White's chess playing, we can infer that mother and son understand that his daring play will NOT result in a victory. The glance is amost humorous...... similar to the way people today would say "yeah, right."
