I think the author uses a tone that is calm at times and frenzied depending on where in the story you mean.

Early in the story Jacob's Towing towards Miss and Mister white is quite sympathetic Jacobs description of the old couple in their cosy house tells readers of their simple affectionate ways the characters change as the story progresses Miss White is common living in the beginning by the end Jakob turn sign to a depressed impulsive and agonize woman Mister why is also transform he feels guilty for his son's death wants to redeem himself for his son he also realizes the potential evil power of the Paw as compared to his wife who doesn't seem to care at the end Jakob turns the white from a warm happy couple into lonely individuals but his talent towards them is still sympathetic
