What's the protagonist's motivation in the monkey's paw?

Assuming that Mr. White is the protagonist, his motivation is to show that the monkey's paw does not have the curse that the old fakir put on it. He also wants to have the money that they first wish for. He wishes to show that he is superior to others who have owned the MP.
