Who is the narrator in the technical sense (first person, third person or omniscient)? Is this point of view effective or not?

"The Monkey's Paw" is narrated in the third person. The narrator is like a fly on the wall merely recording events without an opinion. This is very effective considering the gothic-like elements of the story.
