Why does Major Morris throw the monkey's paw onto the fiery and why do the whites React so strongly ?

Major Morris throws the paw into the fire because he claims it is cursed and should be destroyed. The Whites, however, are more interested in what they can gain in using the purported three wishes than they are afraid of the curse.
