Both Rainsford and Zaroff are obsessed with hunting. That's pretty much all they do so they seem equally skilled at the hunt. Zaroff has more tools at his disposal like hounds and guns. Zaroff, however, is a sporting crazy antagonist so he gives Rainsford a 3 hour head start.
