Too some extent, the two characters were alike. They were both smart, intelligent hunters. Strategy was a part of their everyday lives, but Zaroff ended up becoming rather crazy. He makes his "game" a srictly human competition placing Rainsford as the most important piece on the board. Zaroff is cruel and unfeeling but then Rainsford has a similar disregard for living creatures as well.
