Go does Rainsford avoid the dogs and get back to the mansion?

Rainsford jumps into the ocean. This helps him escape the dogs. Rainsford, a strong swimmer, swims back to the mansion and waits for Zaroff in his bedroom. I think Rainsford is wearing Zaroff's night pajamas or something, a little creepy!
