how do the details about the man who answers the door add to the suspense ?

Ivan is a huge, looming figure; we are told he is a Cossack which makes him a fierce Russian warrior. The question of what he would be doing in such a strange and out-of-the-way place is very challenging, since we need to know much more about the story before we can figure out the answer to that question.
