How does rainsford come to ship-trap island?

He is on a yacht that is sailing past "Ship Trap Island". Rainsford drops his pipe and, in trying to catch it, falls overboard. Rainsford swims for the closest island which happens to be General Zaroff's "Ship Trap Island."
