How does Rainsford end up on the island?

Rainsford is smoking his pipe by the rail on the yacht when he hears a noise. Startled, he accidentally knocks the pipe out of his mouth , and when he tries to catch it..... he falls overboard. Rainsford then swims to shore and ends up on the island.
