In your opinion, why does rainsford choose to confront zaroff in the end, rather than simply ambush him? What does this reveal about his personality

Rainsford gets a taste of what it really feels like to be hunted, to be a "beast at bay". Rainsford is a pretty flat protagonist in the genre of the alpha-male hero. Rainsford wanted to finish this battle on his own term, "man to man." He wanted Zaroff to know he has lost the battle both physically and ideologically (Zaroff thought he was pretty hot stuff as a hunter!).
