They are both flat characters. In simple terms Rainsford is "good" and Zaroff is "bad". Rainsford hunts animals and Zaroff hunts people. Rainsford uses his expertise to stay ahead of Zaroff for part of the story. Zaroff is smart enough to evade Rainsford's traps. The final scene has the standard escape fiction man vs man fight to the death in Zaroff's bedroom.
