at the end of the story, Rainsford makes an important decision. He could attack Zaroff from behind. Instead, he divides to fight Zaroff face to face.

 Rainsford is a straight up sort of guy. He has been a "beast at bay" and wants to finish the game on Zaroff's terms. He wants Zaroff to finish what he started and know that this "beast" has turned the tables on him.
