I believe that Rainsford turns the tables and kills Zaroff. Rainsford's perception of the hunt may change over the course of the novel, but Zaroff tried to hunt him down and kill him. Rainsford wouldn't have thought twice about killing the lunatic.... and he did end up sleeping in Zaroff's bed.
