The narrative is linear in that there are no flashbacks or interruptions in time. Richard Connell breaks the story into three parts. There is Rainsford getting to the island, there is the conflict initiated at Zaroff's mansion, and there is the final hunt culminating in the final showdown between the protagonist (Rainsford) and the Antagonist (Zaroff). This is a classic escape type of story.
