The external conflict is always man vs man. Rainsford has the internal conflict of finding the strength and ingenuity to avoid Zaroff.

the external conflict can be between the sea and rainsford "his enemy " he admitted , and zaroff .... the internal is between survival and death , after aserious challenges he proved salvation :)
