Rainsford and General Zaroff are having dinner and discussing the "hunt," General Zaroff tells Rainsford about one of his former prey. He says to avoid "Death Swamp" because one other fellow ran into it and it was full of quicksand. "The deplorable part of it was Lazarus followed him. I loved Lazarus he was the finest hound in my pack."
