What happens during the three days of the chase?

I'm sorry, this question calls for far too much information for a short-answer forum.

On the first day of the hunt, which begins in the afternoon, Rainsford finds a tree to climb and hide in for the night. Unfortunately, Zaroff appears at the tree with a pistol, looks up, and smiles. He doesn't however make a move against Rainsford.
