In the beginning of the story. Whitney asks Raisford if he believes the animal feels something besides instinctual fear when hunted. Rainsford responds, "Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?"

After becoming and experiencing the status of prey..... Rainsford likely feels a bit more empathy for the animal.
