What skills of zaroff's made escape difficult ?

Zaroff knew his island well. He seemed to set up the whole island to prove difficult for escape. There was of course "Dead Man's Swamp" with the quicksand. Also Zaroff had his hounds to track with. Being an island, Zaroff thought escape was impossible.
