How does Gogol's definition of home change throughout the novel?
The novel shows us how one can simultaneously belong to two cultures, in this novel it is based on Indian and American culture. Gogol does indeed obtain a national and cultural identity. At one end of the spectrum is his Indian cultural identity and then other is his American. Gogol definition of home changes all the time as he experiences all the difficulties of finding himself and fitting in. His Indian and American culture's pull him into different directions as to where he should belong. He tries hard to find his way by moving from one place to another but his idea of home again changes when he meets his girlfriend. Finally Gogol settles to the idea that home is realizing who you are as a person in this world.
