Possibly, their marriage would have lasted. Gogol spends much of Chapter Twelve reminiscing about the early years of his marriage, and the couple's happiness was obvious. Unfortunately, things change and couple grow apart. I would not, however, blame the demise of their marriage on cultural problems alone.
