Monsieur Loisel is not materialistic. He doesn't worry about parties, clothing, or having more than what they already he have. He's all about trying to make his wife happy. He sacrifices the money saved up to buy a gun in order to buy his wife a dress for the ball they really can't afford to go to. Later, he sacrifices his lifestyle to pay back the necklace that his wife lost.
