In my opinion, Mathilde brought punishment upon herself. Her pride caused her to borrow the necklace, and her pride also served to keep her from admitting the truth. Had she fessed up and admitted to losing the necklace, her friend could have told her it was mere paste. The person I personally feel sorriest for is Mr. Loisel.
