This question calls for your opinion, there is no right or wrong answer. In my opinion, Mathilde should have told the truth. She should have swallowed her pride and admit that she lost the necklace. Yes, her friend might have been upset with her, but at least Mathlide.... and her husband, could have saved themselves years of hard work to pay off a debt incurred by replacing a necklace that was nothing more than paste.
