how did matilda change from the beginning of the story to the end of the story and what is the theme

Over the course of the novel, Mathilde changes from a spoiled young woman into a hardworking woman. Her dreams of an affluent lifestyle disappear with Madame Forestier's necklace. Her pride and refusal to admit the loss of the necklace to her friend, results in her husband, who provided a very comfortable living, having to work all the harder. In addition, Mathilde had to hire out for all of the tasks she once paid others to do for her. In my opinion, the best word to decribe her would be humbled.

Loisel changed from a precarious spoiled women who always cared about her status and appearence to a solicitous, hardworking women who helped her husband to pay off their debt. The theme of this story might be to condone whatever we have or whatever we are born with.
