The author captures and portrays Madame Loisel in such a way that we can't help but be interested..... no matter how we perceive her actions. In this character, most of us can envision someone we know. The friend who only shops labels, won't be seen in out of date clothing, and won't socialize outside of what they perceive to be the right "group" of friends. She's vain, and she's foolish, and she skirts the truth in order to save face. She destroys her life for a "thing" ...... and in the end we find that the cherished thing is worhless.
