Is the story "The Necklace" is criticism on materialism ?

Materialism is a major theme in The Necklace. Mathilde longs for the riches of life that the elite enjoy.  She finds "feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries." She is ashamed of her modest life and wants to at least project the illusion of wealth if she cannot actually have it.
