Mathilde's dream was to be wealthy and without financial worry.... these are the things she believed she was meant for. In losing the necklace, as well as refusing to take responsibility for losing the necklace (admiiting the loss), she placed herself and her husband in a state of financial ruin. Hard work was the only solution, and this included both spouses.... Mathilde was no long able to stay confortably at home.... she now had to help earn the money.
Although Mathilde is forced to help correct her mistake, she continues to resent her life. After ten years passes by, the couple has paid their debt, and yet, instead of being thankful it's over..... Mathilde continues to dwell on her losses.... what could have been. Whe she meets her friend, it's almost as if she is blaming Madame Forestier for her experiences, when in fact, Mathilde has no one to blame but herself.
