In context, we only have one male and female relationship..... Mr. Loisel and his wife. Mr. Loisel does the best he can to make his wife happy, sadly, it is never enough. In my opinion, this conflict is never resolved. Mr. Loisel spends ten years working to pay for his wife's mistakes, and we can see in Mme. Loisel's final conversation with Mme. Forestier that Mathilde still feels sorry for herself.
