Why did she not tell her friend about the necklace in the first place?

Like when her friend asked about the necklace it could have been a good time to tell her, but she didn't do it instead she lies.

I think that Madame Forester did not tell Mathilde the necklace was a fake because she wanted her to feel good about herself: She thought that the appearance of wearing fine diamonds would be fulfilling for her.
