On the one hand, he is conflicted because his goal is to get home as soon as possible. He wants to see his wife and his son whom he left behind many, many years ago. On the other hand, he is a "man" who wants to show his masculinity in every situation. His involvement with Calypso lasts for seven years; he assumes that there is no way to escape and does not understand that Calypso is just keeping him under her spell.
