Some people find it unfair that Odysseus receives help from Athena, but in reality, Homer has her aid Odysseus only at the end of the fight, after his skill and shrewd planning have already tipped the scales of the battle. Thus, we are safe to assume that Athena's help did not tip the scales in his favor, and his victory against the suitors was a testament to his own strength and skill. Athena, of course, aided Odysseus throughout the story, bit in reagrd to the conclusion..... I don't believe the gods had a part in it.
