Odysseus is the epic hero because he never forgets his goal, to get home. Even though he is married he sleeps with the goddess Kalypso (I know, such a sacrifice) He leaves this beautiful island on a rickety raft only to be near drowned by a pissed off Poseidon. Really the island he was on was practically a paradise where he could get all the sensual loving and fruit that he wanted. Still he longed to go home to all his chores and a nagging wife; now that's dedication.
