I think that Odysseus really desired glory. Sure he wanted to get home but there is nothing wrong with scoring some glory points on the way. Odysseus taunts the Cyclops (probably because cyclops had no depth perception) while the other men run away like scaredy cats. Clearly Odysseus wants some P.R out of this. Yes, he pays a price to maintain his tough guy image. Odysseus gets lost and many of his men die.
