In the Cyclops, Why do the “fellows’ faces” turn from shining to grief? Why does Odysseus hush his men?

I believe this is when they are stealing sheep from the cyclops Polyphemus. The men are happy to escape cyclops ans steal his sheep but are sad when they realise how many men the cyclops has killed. Odysseus does not want to alert Polyphemus as to where they are.
