What lessons can be learned from the defeat of Odysseus and his men?

I would think that relaxing after a battle is not good. Odysseus’s men lounged on the beach and feasted while survivors of the battle got reinforcements from further inland. Odysseus and his men were caught by surprise but suffered heavy losses.
