Why does Odysseus bring up Zeus when he first meets the Cyclops?

From the book Odysseus (chapter 9).
Odysseus brings up Zeus in order to protect himself and his men. He tells the Cyclopes that their course was changed at Zeus' pleasure..... that Zeus had planned it that way.
