The title, The Old Man and the Sea, is simple, and yet it encapsulates the essence of the book. Santiago is defined by his age. This isn't a bad thing rather it gives the reader context into his life and his struggles. Everything Santiago does has shades of his once majestic youth. The book is very much about putting old age in context and searching for just a little redemption. The sea is the old man's myth. It becomes a metaphor for his love, struggle, youth...the sea is his very identity
