Hemmingway ends the novella by painting Santiago as a Christ figure...... Santiago can almost be seen as a martyr. He transcended defeat, lost his marlin to the sharks, is described as carrying the ship's mast across his shoulders (like Jesus carried the cross to Golgatha), collapses of his bed, face down and palms up.
