The novel opens by telling us exactly who Santiago is: "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish"
This is what we learn about our protagonist......... he is introduced to us, and we learn that he is looking for his luck.
